OUYA Console Sets Kickstarter Record Raising $2.5M In 24 Hours

The OUYA console is now official.

After setting Kickstarter on fire by raising $2,589,687.77 in the first 24 hours, OUYA has proven to be a seriously wanted gaming device. The company was completely surprised as the company’s goal of $950,000 far exceeded the expectations.

OUYA is an Android-based video gaming device that’s hack enabled.

According to Kickstarter, OUYA is the fastest project to ever hit the million-dollar pledge mark reaching the goal in just 8 hours and 22 minutes.

That’s insane!

The console is fond to independent game developers as it promises to open the console market by shipping the consoles with the SDK needed for developing on Android. It also has a very attractive price point of $99. So far, the console has 23,000 backers on Kickstarter.

Julie Uhrman, founder and CEO of OUYA explains:

“To have an idea, share it with the world, and have it resonate is a really amazing experience. Kickstarter gave us an opportunity not only to broadcast the concept of OUYA but to have supporters rally around us and demonstrate–in a very real way–their belief in our mission. It’s phenomenal to have raised $3M in such a quick period. We feel personally committed to every backer and we will make them proud.”

OUYAhas actually increased production because of the demand on Kickstarter. there are currently only 1,000 consoles available at this time but OUYA is now reporting that they have indeed pumped it up to a whopping 80,000 consoles available for $99 a pledge. the pre-orders are currently sitting at 20,000.
